Misteriosos rayos de luz son vistos en el cielo de California

Misteriosos rayos de luz se vieron en el cielo en el área de Sacramento el viernes por la noche, sorprendiendo a los juerguistas del Día de San Patricio que luego publicaron videos en las redes sociales de la sorprendente vista.

Jaime Hernández estaba en King Cong Brewing Company en Sacramento para una celebración del Día de San Patricio cuando algunos miembros del grupo notaron las luces. Hernández rápidamente comenzó a filmar. Terminó en unos 40 segundos, dijo el sábado.

“Principalmente, estábamos conmocionados, pero asombrados de haber podido presenciarlo”, dijo Hernández en un correo electrónico. “Ninguno de nosotros había visto algo así”.

El propietario de la cervecería publicó el video de Hernández en Instagram y preguntó si alguien podía resolver el misterio.

Jonathan McDowell dice que puede. McDowell es astrónomo del Centro Harvard-Smithsonian de Astrofísica. McDowell dijo el sábado en una entrevista con The Associated Press que tiene un 99,9% de confianza en que los rayos de luz provienen de desechos espaciales en llamas.

McDowell dijo que un paquete de comunicaciones japonés que transmitía información desde la Estación Espacial Internacional a un satélite de comunicaciones y luego de regreso a la Tierra quedó obsoleto en 2017 cuando se retiró el satélite. El equipo, que pesaba 310 kilogramos (683 libras), fue desechado de la estación espacial en 2020 porque ocupaba un espacio valioso y se quemaría por completo al volver a entrar, agregó McDowell.

Los restos en llamas crearon un “espectacular espectáculo de luces en el cielo”, dijo McDowell. Calculó que los escombros tenían una altura de aproximadamente 40 millas, moviéndose a miles de millas por hora.

La Fuerza Espacial de EE. UU. confirmó la ruta de reingreso sobre California para el Sistema de Comunicación Inter-Orbit, y el momento es consistente con lo que la gente vio en el cielo, agregó. La Fuerza Espacial no pudo ser contactada de inmediato el sábado con preguntas.
