Los costos derivados de la crisis climática aumentaron más de un 800% en las últimas dos décadas

En 2021, el costo económico de los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos fue de aproximadamente US$ 329.000 millones en todo el mundo, el tercer año de costos más altos registrado y casi el doble de la ayuda total donada por los países ricos a los más pobres ese mismo año.

Entre 2000 y 2002, la ONU necesitó una media de US$ 1.600 millones de financiación cada año para proyectos humanitarios tras fenómenos meteorológicos extremos. Entre 2019 y 2021, buscaba una media de US$ 15.500 millones cada año, un aumento de más del 800%.

Además, el informe muestra que por cada US$ 2 necesarios para hacer frente a las catástrofes provocadas por el cambio climático, los países donantes ricos solo aportan la mitad.

“El cambio climático está perjudicando, y seguirá perjudicando, en primer lugar a los negros, a los indígenas, a las personas de color y a otras comunidades vulnerables, alterando sus medios de subsistencia, su cultura, su salud y su modo de vida”, declaró Russell Armstrong, asesor principal de Política Climática de Oxfam América.

Desde las diferentes guerras hasta la escasez de alimentos en todo el mundo, los investigadores afirman que la crisis climática está ejerciendo aún más presión sobre un sistema humanitario de la ONU que ya tiene problemas financieros.

El impacto de las catástrofes provocadas por el cambio climático agrava las desigualdades que ya existen en la infraestructura física y social de un país, y afecta sobre todo a las naciones de bajos ingresos.
