¿Por qué caminar es lo mejor para la espalda?

Algunos le llaman walking, pero se trata de andar, la actividad de toda la vida, la que realizaban nuestros padres antes de que popularizaran los gimnasios. Con anglicismo o sin el, parece que caminar le está ganando terreno al running, que tanta fiebre ha despertado en la población en los últimos años. La causa principal es que el sencillo paseo es un deporte apto para todas las edades, los bolsillos y para casi todas las formas físicas.

Un paseo sin paradas ni distracciones, de al menos 45 minutos diarios (salvo excepciones por prescripción médica) y a buen ritmo nos ayudará también a mejorar nuestra salud global. Toma nota de estos diez motivos para calzarte las zapatillas, según el autor de Escuela de la Espada.

1. Regula los niveles de azúcar. Se reduce el depósito de glucosa, ya que las células la consumen durante la actividad física.

2. Tonifica los músculos de las piernas. Los ejercita, los obliga a trabajar y les otorga una sensación de fortaleza y bienestar.

3. Disminuye la presión arterial. El ejercicio favorece la dilatación de los vasos sanguíneos y el transporte de oxígeno a través de los mismos. Es una manera orgánica más eficiente de trabajo que reduce la tensión arterial.

4. Favorece la motilidad intestinal. Evitando el estreñimiento y las hemorroides. Caminando mueves el intestino, lo que facilita la evacuación de las heces.

5. Mejora el estado anímico. La actividad física favorece la liberación de las endorfinas, las llamadas hormonas de la felicidad. Pasear nos relaja y ayuda a pensar con claridad.

6. Regula el peso. El cuerpo en movimiento reduce las calorías y aumenta la masa muscular, que, a su vez, necesita de mayor consumo energético para funcionar.

7. Fortalece los huesos. Retrasa la aparición de la osteoporosis a propiciar la mejor absorción del calcio.

8. Disminuye los dolores musculares y articulares. En ambos casos se mejora la flexibilidad y la fuerza.

9. Mejora la calidad del sueño. El deporte suave nos cansa sin llegar a activarnos en exceso, aunque siempre es mejor practicarlo entre unas cuatro y seis horas antes de acostarse.

10. La vida se hace más larga y mejor. La actividad física protege nuestra salud cardiovascular y fomenta la longevidad.
