La FGR afirmó que Mejía Coto asesinó a su novia y compañera de trabajo, Lorena Hernández Quintanilla, el 31 de diciembre de 2017 en un dormitorio de la sede policial en Mejicanos.
El Juzgado Especializado para una Vida Libre de Violencia para las Mujeres impuso una pena de 50 años de prisión al agente Néstor Alfonso Mejía, acusado de feminicidio agravado, en perjuicio de su pareja y también agente, Lorena Beatriz Hernández.
Las investigaciones de la Fiscalía General de la República indicaron que Mejía Coto asesinó a la víctima la noche del 31 de diciembre de 2017 en un dormitorio de la Subdelegación de Zacamil, Mejicanos.
El Juzgado fundamentó su sentencia en testigos y prueba científica para condenar al agente Mejía.
Mejía y Hernández mantenían una relación sentimental y esa noche estuvieron discutiendo, la cual cada vez se volvió más acalorada y que terminó originado el ataque de Mejía, quien le quitó el arma de fuego que portaba la mujer y le disparó con ella misma.
El informe de Medicina Legal corroboró que la mujer recibió un disparo desde unos 50 centímetros y que la bala ingresó de manera vertical desde su cabeza, lo que anatómicamente descarta el suicidio. Además el informe señala que no se le encontraron tatuajes de pólvora y que presentaba laceraciones producto de golpes que Mejía le propinó durante la discusión.
Debido a las pruebas presentadas el juez dictaminó a Mejía culpable y lo condenó a 50 años de prisión.
Mejía Coto fue arrestado el 2 de enero de 2018, dos días después de que la joven, de 25 años, fuera hallada asesinada en la habitación de la Subdelegación.
