La jefa del FMI declara que los riesgos de la aprobación del bitcóin como moneda de curso legal en El Salvador “se ven a simple vista”

La directora gerente del Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI), Kristalina Georgieva, declaró este jueves que la decisión de las autoridades de El Salvador de aprobar el bitcóin como moneda de curso legal en el país conlleva unos riesgos que se pueden ver “a simple vista”.

“Es una decisión soberana. Que sea una decisión soberana no la hace automáticamente una buena decisión porque lo que se introduce en El Salvador es un activo altamente volátil para servir como divisa“, afirmó Georgieva.

En ese contexto, preguntó cómo recaudar impuestos cuando el valor del bitcón crece y cae o cómo planear gastos. “Es un problema con el que el Ministerio de Finanzas estará luchando. No es fácil”, dijo.

Asimismo, declaró la jefa del FMI, se plantean cuestiones sobre cómo los residentes van a “vender bienes y servicios en este activo volátil”. En ese contexto, reiteró que también “cuida el medio ambiente”, pero “uno de los problemas con el bitcóin” es que minarlo necesita mucha energía.

Georgieva indicó que es “un problema cuando atamos el destino de la economía a la volatilidad del activo”, destacando que es difícil hacer que un activo se convierta en un medio de pago. “Y lo que nos importa son sistemas de pago eficientes, efectivos y fiables”, concluyó.

A principios de junio, la Asamblea Legislativa, de mayoría oficialista, aprobó el proyecto de ley, enviado por el mandatario salvadoreño, Nayib Bukele, que permite el uso del bitcóin como moneda de curso legal en el territorio. Este paso convierte a El Salvador en la primera nación del mundo en usar la criptomoneda de esta manera, ya que obligará a todo el comercio a aceptarla como método para transacciones.
