El uso de dinero móvil y pagos digitales se dispara en Centroamérica

El Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) ha revelado en un estudio publicado este lunes un rápido crecimiento en el uso de dinero móvil y pagos digitales en Centroamérica, con especial énfasis en Panamá y República Dominicana.

Según el informe “Hacia una mayor inclusión financiera para el desarrollo”, el porcentaje de adultos propietarios de cuentas de dinero móvil en la región se ha duplicado, pasando del 4 % al 8 % entre 2017 y 2021.

El BID destaca que las plataformas digitales están facilitando el ahorro, mejorando la seguridad, la rapidez y reduciendo los costos asociados con los pagos domésticos y las remesas internacionales, lo cual es especialmente relevante en una región donde los hogares más vulnerables dependen en gran medida de las remesas.

A pesar de este crecimiento, el estudio enfatiza la necesidad de cerrar brechas con otras partes del mundo tanto en la adopción de herramientas financieras digitales como en políticas de inclusión financiera.

“En nuestra región es clave promover políticas para impulsar la disponibilidad y el acceso a servicios financieros tales como el crédito, el ahorro, y el pago de servicios”, afirma Tomás Bermúdez, gerente general del BID para la región de Centroamérica, México, Panamá, República Dominicana y Haití.

El uso de pagos móviles se ha convertido en una piedra angular del comercio electrónico en América Latina y el Caribe, según el portal estadístico Statista. En 2020, el valor de las transacciones de este tipo superó los $38,000 millones en la región y se espera que supere los $100,000 millones en 2025.

Los pagos móviles abarcan una variedad de servicios que van desde la transferencia de dinero y el abono de compras electrónicas hasta los pagos sin contacto, lo que refleja una creciente digitalización de la economía en la región.
