Actividad sismica en el oriente del pais

El Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales informa sobre la continuación de la actividad sísmica localizadaaproximadamente, a 17 km al sureste de la ciudad de San Miguel y, a 14 km al noreste de Chirilagua, en el departamento de San Miguel.

La Red Sísmica Nacional de El Salvador ha registrado un total de 62 sismos, entre las 05:56 p.m. del 23 de diciembre y las 12:17 a.m. de este día 27 de diciembre.

Del total de sismos registrados, 67 han sido localizados y, al menos 22 de ellos han sido reportados como sentidos por la población próxima a la zona epicentral. La magnitud de los sismos localizados oscila entre 2.2 y 4.5.

El sismo de mayor magnitud ocurrió a las 09:15 a.m. el día 26 de diciembre, con una magnitud de 4.5, a una profundidad de 6 km y, fue sentido entre la ciudad de San Miguel y Chirilagua, con intensidad IV-V en la Escala de Mercalli Modificada.

Por las características de las señales registradas, el origen de esta actividad sísmica es atribuido a la activación de fallas geológicas en la zona.

De acuerdo con el historial sísmico de la zona, esta actividad podría prolongarse durante varios días e incluso semanas, sin descartarse la ocurrencia de sismos con magnitudes mayores a las ya registradas, de las cuales podrían esperarse valores en el orden de 5.0 a 6.0 de magnitud.

El Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (MARN), informa que se dará seguimiento a esta actividad sísmica, para informar a la población sobre la evolución de este fenómeno pero hacen un llamado a la población a atender las indicaciones emitidas por las autoridades de Protección Civil y no prestar atención a rumores o a información no oficial acerca de esta situación.
