La deforestación en la Amazonía brasileña cae un 61 % en el primer mes de Lula

La deforestación en la Amazonía brasileña cayó un 61,3 % en enero, el primer mes del Gobierno del presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, en comparación con el mismo periodo de 2022, según datos divulgados este viernes.

En total fueron destruidos 166,58 kilómetros cuadrados de selva en el mes, según los datos por satélite del sistema Deter, del Instituto Brasileño de Investigaciones Espaciales (INPE, por sus siglas en portugués).

Estos datos son parciales, puesto que no captan la deforestación en áreas cubiertas por nubes, y en enero de 2023 no se pudo observar por este motivo el 50,27 % del territorio de la Amazonía brasileña, mientras que en enero de 2022 esa área era del 48,04 %.

El dato fue peor que el registrado en enero de 2021 (82,8 kilómetros cuadrados) o de 2019 (136,1 kilómetros cuadrados), durante la gestión de Jair Bolsonaro, quien relajó el combate a la deforestación, permitió la tala y la minería en zonas protegidas y promovió polémicos proyectos desarrollistas en la región.

Pronto para confirmar una reversión de la deforestación

En un comunicado, la organización no gubernamental WWF valoró positivamente el dato de deforestación de enero de 2023, aunque dijo que «aún es pronto» para hablar sobre una reversión de la tendencia de destrucción de la selva.

En 2022, el último año del Gobierno de Bolsonaro, la Amazonía brasileña perdió 10.267 kilómetros cuadrados de cobertura vegetal, un nivel récord desde que se hacen mediciones por satélite.

El presidente Lula ha puesto entre sus prioridades la lucha contra la deforestación, con el objetivo de reducirla a cero 2030.

En su primer mes de Gobierno, Lula reactivó el Fondo Amazonía, financiado por Noruega y Alemania, revocó medidas polémicas de Bolsonaro y montó un grupo con 17 ministerios para definir políticas de preservación de la selva.

En Brasil la deforestación es la principal causa de la emisión de gases contaminantes a la atmósfera.
