La variante Delta se ha vuelto la dominante en el mundo y, según los expertos, es más peligrosa e infecciosa que las demás. La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) compartió que la variante delta se ha extendido a por lo menos 100 países desde que la detectaron. Gracias a ella, muchos países han tenido que regresar a medidas más estrictas de seguridad. Un estudio publicado en el New England Journal of Medicine revela la eficacia que tienen las vacunas Pfizer y AstraZeneca.
El estudio mostró que es necesario tener ambas dosis, ya que una sola vacuna no te protege lo suficiente contra el virus, la Pfizer te da una protección del 36% y la AstraZeneca del 30%. En cambio, ambas dosis de la Pfizer tienen el 88% de eficacia para prevenir los síntomas de la variante Delta, mientras que la AstraZeneca tiene un 67%.
En Israel se encontraron datos que mostraban menos eficacia de Pfizer contra Delta (64%), pero aún así prevenía síntomas graves. Escocia y Canadá también llevaron a cabo estudios similares y obtuvieron resultados distintos, los investigadores dicen que las diferencias eran de esperarse.
“Simplemente tenemos que tomarlo como pequeñas piezas de un rompecabezas, y no poner demasiado peso en ningún número”, mencionó Natalie Dean, una bioestadística de la Universidad de Emory.
Aunque es difícil tener un número certero para saber cuál vacuna funciona mejor, todos los estudios han encontrado que las vacunas son muy eficientes para evitar hospitalizaciones. Joe Biden, respecto a la variante Delta, dijo en una entrevista con CNN, “Es el doble de infecciosa. Afortunadamente, a diferencia de 2020, realmente tenemos una herramienta que detiene la variante delta en su camino: se llama vacuna”.Hasta ahora, los estudios parecen indicar que la Pfizer es la más efectiva contra todas las variantes del coronavirus. Sin embargo, se le ha recomendado a las personas que se pongan la vacuna a la que tengan acceso.
