El catálogo de Queen podría batir un récord histórico en el mercado musical

Queen es una de las bandas de rock más famosas e influyentes de la historia, formada en Londres en 1970 por Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor y John Deacon. Sus canciones han trascendido generaciones y fronteras, y ahora podrían alcanzar un valor récord en el mercado musical.

Según una fuente cercana a la negociación, Universal Music Group está en conversaciones avanzadas para comprar el catálogo de Queen en Norteamérica, que actualmente pertenece a Disney Music Group. El acuerdo podría superar los 1,000 millones de dólares y se espera que se cierre dentro de un mes.

Disney adquirió los derechos de la música de Queen en Norteamérica en 1991, cuando compró Hollywood Records, la discográfica que había firmado con la banda en 1985. Desde entonces, ambas empresas han tenido un acuerdo de distribución global para el resto del mundo.

Sin embargo, los miembros de Queen y los herederos de Mercury siguen siendo los dueños del catálogo de canciones fuera de Estados Unidos y Canadá, a través de la compañía Queen Productions Ltd, que fundaron en 1975. Cada uno tiene el mismo porcentaje de acciones y recibe las regalías correspondientes.

Si se confirma la venta del catálogo de Queen a Universal Music Group, se trataría de la transacción más grande jamás realizada por el catálogo de un artista, superando con creces los 500 millones de dólares que Sony pagó por el catálogo de Bruce Springsteen en 2021.

Queen sigue siendo una banda muy popular y rentable, gracias a sus éxitos atemporales como “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Will Rock You” o “We Are the Champions”, que son himnos en eventos deportivos y culturales. Además, su legado se ha visto reforzado por el éxito de la película “Bohemian Rhapsody” en 2018, que ganó cuatro premios Oscar y recaudó más de 900 millones de dólares en taquilla.

Queen también continúa girando por el mundo con el nombre de “Queen +”, acompañados por vocalistas como Paul Rodgers o Adam Lambert, que rinden homenaje al inolvidable Freddie Mercury, fallecido en 1991 por complicaciones derivadas del sida.
