A nadie le gusta tener que dar una mala noticia. Por ejemplo, quieres acabar con una relación de pareja pero solo de pensar en decírselo a la otra persona te pones de los nervios porque no quieres hacerle daño.
Haz quedado a cenar con ese objetivo pero te pasas el primer cuarto de hora mostrándote amistoso y hablando de nada antes de atreverte a entrar en materia.
La otra forma de hacerlo, la correcta, según un estudio estadounidense: llegas, te sientas y antes de que la persona que está a punto de ser abandonada pueda ni siquiera consultar el menú le dices:
“Tenemos que hablar”. Así, sin más preámbulos. Y es que, como han descubierto los autores de la citada investigación, los profesores de lingüística Alan Manning, de la Universidad Brigham Young, en Utah, y Nicole Amare, de la Universidad del Sur de Alabama, a la hora de recibir una mala noticia como el fin de una relación los seres humanos preferimos el estilo directo y al grano, sin medias tintas, rodeos ni paliativos que pretendan endulzarnos la realidad.
El experimento consistió en bombardear a los participantes con una serie de informaciones no gratas presentadas de formas variadas visuales, textuales y verbales.
A la hora de transmitir un mensaje negativo respecto a una relación social (por ejemplo, “quiero dejar de salir contigo” o “estás despedido”), Manning y Amare constataron que la gente valoraba que se lo dijeran con franqueza y de forma directa, sin intentar endulzarlo a base de fórmulas educadas.
No hace falta empezar por “voy a romper contigo”, sería demasiado duro, pero con un simple “tenemos que hablar” le das al receptor del mensaje unos cuantos segundos para empezar a procesar que le van a dar una mala noticia.
También si esta versa sobre problemas de salud, incluso algo tan fuerte como “tienes cáncer, te quedan dos meses de vida”, la mayoría de los individuos prefieren que se lo digan sin rodeos y lo más ajustado a la verdad. Según Manning, “negar los hechos no sirve de nada. Si tu casa está ardiendo, tú quieres saberlo para poder salir. Y si tienes cáncer, lo mismo. Quieres saber la verdad y no escuchar al médico haciendo circunloquios”.
