La escultura que simboliza el paso de la vida a la muerte

En el cementerio de Poblenou o Pueblo Nuevo, un camposanto fundado en 1775 y ubicado en el barrio del mismo nombre de la ciudad de Barcelona , se encuentra una de las esculturas de mármol más significativas y enigmáticas del mundo: “El Beso de la Muerte”, (“El Petó de la Mort”, en catalán). La escultura representa a la muerte, en forma de un esqueleto alado, plantando un beso en la frente de un hombre joven y atlético, imagen que puede evocar tanto el éxtasis en el rostro del fallecido al dejar este mundo, como la tristeza por renunciar a la existencia en la flor de la vida.

El encargo de la obra fue hecho al taller del escultor Jaume Barba, a quien desde siempre le fue adjudicada la creación de la escultura. Sin embargo, tomando en cuenta que este artesano tenía más de 70 años cuando se realizó, algunos se inclinan a pensar que el verdadero autor fue Joan Fontbernal, yerno del maestro y quien era el escultor más cualificado del taller de la familia Barba.

La pieza conocida como “El beso de muerte”, que según algunos inspiró la película clásica “El séptimo sello”, de Ingmar Bergman, fue un encargo de la familia catalana Llaudet, que hacia el año 1930 perdió a un hijo en plena juventud. Los Llaudet, entonces, para homenajear al joven fallecido, quisieron poner una escultura para su tumba que representase los siguientes versos del poeta Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer que se pusieron en el epitafio: «Mas su joven corazón no puede más; / en sus venas la sangre se detiene y se hiela / y el ánimo perdido con la fe se abraza / sintiéndose caer al beso de la muerte».
