La NASA recalcula la posibilidad de que un asteroide del tamaño del Empire State Building impacte contra la Tierra

En una conferencia de prensa realizada este miércoles, científicos de la NASA revelaron que existe una probabilidad de 1 en 1.750 de que un asteroide llamado Bennu, del tamaño del rascacielos neoyorquino Empire State Building, impacte contra la Tierra antes del año 2300, informó The New York Times.

El cálculo indica un riesgo un poco más probable en comparación con una estimación anterior, de 1 en 2.700 durante un período más corto, entre hoy día y el 2200. “No es un cambio significativo”, subrayó Davide Farnocchia, científico del Laboratorio de Propulsión a Chorro de la NASA (California, EE.UU.). “No estoy más preocupado por Bennu que antes. La probabilidad de impacto sigue siendo muy pequeña“, insistió el especialista.

En cualquier caso, la trayectoria de Bennu se conoce con la suficiente precisión para establecer que las posibilidades de colisión serán nulas durante el próximo siglo. Sin embargo, ese cuerpo celeste se está aproximando a la órbita de nuestro planeta y en 2135 se acercará a una distancia equivalente a la mitad del trayecto entre la Tierra y la Luna. El día más preocupante sería el 24 de septiembre de 2182, pero habría solo 0,037 % de probabilidades de impacto.

Bennu tiene aproximadamente medio kilómetro de ancho. La colisión con un objeto así no sería la suficientemente fuerte como para provocar una extinción general de la vida en el planeta, pero sí podría causar una gran devastación. “Por regla general, se puede decir que el tamaño de un cráter será de 10 a 20 veces el tamaño del objeto”, informó Lindley Johnson, oficial de defensa planetaria de la NASA. “Un objeto con un tamaño de medio kilómetro creará un cráter de al menos 5, y puede que hasta 10 kilómetros de diámetro. Pero el área afectada […] sería extensa, hasta 100 veces el tamaño del cráter”, puntualizó.
