Expertos dicen que “julio será el mes más caluroso registrado en el planeta”

El calor de julio ha sido ya tan extremo que es “prácticamente seguro” que este mes batirá récords “por un margen significativo”, según afirman el Servicio de Cambio Climático Copérnico de la Unión Europea y la Organización Meteorológica Mundial en un informe publicado este jueves.

Acabamos de vivir el período de tres semanas más caluroso del que se tiene constancia, y casi con toda seguridad en más de cien mil años.

Normalmente, estos récords, que registran la temperatura media del aire en todo el mundo, se superan por centésimas de grado. Pero la temperatura de los primeros 23 días de julio promedió 16,95 grados Celsius, muy por encima del récord anterior de 16,63 grados Celsius establecido en julio de 2019, según el informe.

Los datos utilizados para rastrear estos registros se remontan a 1940, pero muchos científicos —incluidos los de Copernicus— dicen que es casi seguro que estas temperaturas sean las más cálidas que el planeta ha visto en 120,000 años, dado lo que sabemos de milenios de datos climáticos extraídos de anillos de árboles, arrecifes de coral y núcleos de sedimentos marinos profundos.

“Son las temperaturas más cálidas de la historia de la humanidad”, afirma Samantha Burgess, subdirectora de Copernicus.

Todo apunta a un verano abrasador en el hemisferio norte, potencialmente sin precedentes. Carlo Buontempo, director de Copernicus, afirma que “las probabilidades de que se produzca un verano récord son muy altas”, aunque advierte que es demasiado pronto para afirmarlo con seguridad.

El coste humano del calor es desolador. Las temperaturas han superado los 50 grados centígrados (120 grados Fahrenheit) en algunas zonas de EE.UU., lo que ha provocado un aumento de las muertes relacionadas con el calor y quemaduras mortales por caídas al suelo abrasador.
