Al menos 31 personas han muerto y más de 50 han resultado heridas en los incendios que afectan al centro y al norte de Portugal, según han confirmado este lunes fuentes de Protección Civil a Efe. Ni julio ni agosto: octubre y, concretamente, el domingo día 15, será recordado en el país como el peor día del año por el elevado número de incendios forestales. Son más de 500 focos, hay carreteras y autopistas cortadas y varias aldeas han tenido que ser evacuadas por el peligro de las llamas que se expanden con temperaturas superiores a los 30 grados centígrados, una humedad inferior al 20% y unos fuertes vientos que llevan el drama de una parte a otra del país
De los 500 incendios a medianoche del domingo, el lunes continuaban en activos 108, en los que estaban trabajando más de 5.000 bomberos. “Todos los medios de que dispone el país están trabajando para la extinción”, ha declarado la directora de Protección Civil Patrícia Gaspar, que no espera que la extinción de todos los fuegos ocurra antes del martes. Todo el centro y el norte del país está en alerta roja.
Los incendios más graves del país, como está ocurriendo durante esta nefasta temporada, se agrupan en el centro, en las sierras que rodean a Coimbra (aproximadamente 134.000 habitantes), aunque la oleada de incendios se extiende por Valença, Sertã, Viana do Castelo, Braga, Viseu y Monção. Hasta 17 bomberos y seis civiles han sufrido quemaduras en diferentes accidentes durante las labores de extinción de los incendios, aunque ninguno de ellos tiene heridas de gravedad, según el informe de media tarde del domingo
Dos de las víctimas murieron en el municipio de Penacova, en el distrito de Coimbra. Una tercera falleció en el término municipal de Sertã, en el distrito de Castelo Branco, otros en Vouzela y en Oliveira do Hospital, también en el distrito de Coimbra.
Durante toda la jornada del domingo, una quincena de carreteras quedaron cortadas, sobre todo en el norte del país. La autopista del Norte, la N1, fue cortada en los dos sentidos entre Mealhada y Albergaria; también fue cortada en los dos sentidos la A11 entre Figueiredo y Braga. Varias aldeas y un camping de Figueira da Foz han sido desalojados ante el riesgo de ser alcanzados por las llamas.
