Misterio del Planeta 9: si existe, ¿por qué los científicos no logran verlo?

La desviación de la órbita de otros planetas lleva a los científicos a sospechar que existe uno que aún no se ha encontrado.

Percival Lowell se equivocó muchas veces

Este escritor de viajes y hombre de negocios del siglo XIX, famoso por su fortuna y su perenne bigote, al que se solía ver en impecables trajes de tres piezas, tenía un libro sobre Marte. Sobre esa base, decidió convertirse en un astrónomo. A lo largo de los años haría algunas afirmaciones entusiastas.

En primer lugar, estaba convencido de la existencia de los marcianos y creía (erróneamente) haberlos encontrado. Otros científicos habían detectado unas extrañas líneas que atravesaban el planeta rojo y Lowell planteó que se trataba de canales, construidos por una civilización en crisis en su intento de obtener agua del hielo de masas polares. Se gastó todo su dinero en levantar un observatorio, solo para tener una vista mejor. Resultó que eran en realidad una ilusión óptica que producían las montañas y cráteres de Marte cuando se las observaba con telescopios de baja calidad.

Lowell también creía que el planeta Venus tenía unos radios en su esfera, que dibujó en sus notas como líneas de una tela de araña. (Venus no tiene radios). Aunque sus ayudantes trataron de atisbarlas, parece que era él único que podía ver este detalle inesperado. Actualmente, se asume que no eran más que las sombras que proyectaba el iris de sus ojos cuando miraba al cielo con su telescopio.

Pero, por encima de todo lo demás, Lowell estaba decidido a encontrar el noveno planeta del Sistema Solar, un hipotético planeta X al que entonces se atribuían fenómenos como las órbitas erráticas de los planetas conocidos más alejados del Sol: los colosos de hielo azul Urano y Neptuno. Aunque su mirada nunca alcanzó a captar esa mole fantasma, consumió en la empresa los últimos 10 años de su vida, y después de varias crisis nerviosas, murió a la edad de 61 años.
