George el perro que sacrificó su vida para salvar a un grupo de niños

Gran historia de George (fallecido el 29 de abril de 2007) quien era un perro mascota en Taranaki, Nueva Zelanda, a quien se le atribuyó el sacrificio de su vida para salvar a los niños del vecindario de un ataque de dos pitbull.  El heroísmo de George fue reconocido internacionalmente, y recibió premios póstumos de organizaciones benéficas de animales de Nueva Zelanda y el Reino Unido.

El 29 de abril de 2007, cinco niños en Manaia caminaban a casa cuando fueron atacados por dos pitbulls.  El perro George, de nueve años (nacido en 1997 o 1998), defendió a los niños, pero resultó gravemente herido por el combate cuerpo a cuerpo. Los pit bulls también fueron sacrificados, y su dueño “se enfrentó a un juicio por poseer perros peligrosos”.

Después, George fue alabado y conmemorado por su valentía y sacrificio. La Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals le otorgó una medalla por valentía, la primera otorgada a un perro en 17 años y el primer perro no policía que la recibió; Jerrell Hudman, un veterano del Cuerpo de Marines de los Estados Unidos de la Guerra de Vietnam, estaba tan impresionado por las acciones de George que le dijo al Taranaki Herald que enviaría a su dueño uno de sus tres Corazones Púrpuras.

En la primavera de 2007, se erigió una estatua de bronce de George en Manaia, obra del Fridtjof Hanson de Nueva Plymouth.

En 2009, el Dispensario del Pueblo para Animales Enfermos otorgó a George la Medalla de Oro PDSA, una condecoración que fue colgada del cuello de la estatua de George por Anand Satyanand, entonces Gobernador General de Nueva Zelanda.
