El robot explorador Perseverance se acerca a su destino final, Marte, adonde está previsto que llegue el próximo 18 de febrero.

En esta animación que la NASA acaba de distribuir podrás ver cómo serán los 7 minutos de vértigo que durará la anticipada llegada al planeta rojo.

En ese tiempo el Perseverance pasará de una velocidad de 19.500 km/h en la cima de las atmósfera marciana a unos 3 km/h en el momento del amartizaje, sobre una zona conocida como Cráter de Jezero.

Una vez allí el robot explorador buscará signos de vida microbiana en el planeta durante al menos un año marciano (unos 687 días terrestres).

El vehículo Perseverance recogerá muestras de roca y tierra, las almacenará en tubos y las dejará en la superficie del planeta para que se trasladen a la Tierra en el futuro.

El robot también estudiará la geología del planeta rojo y probará formas en las que los astronautas en futuras misiones podrían producir oxígeno a partir del CO2 en la atmósfera, para respirar y usarse como combustible.

“Siete minutos de terror”

La secuencia de complicadas maniobras que precede al amartizaje del Perseverance ha sido ya descrita por muchos expertos como “siete minutos de terror”.

El robot, que partió de la Tierra en julio de 2020, viajará encapsulado en una carcasa de dos partes: un escudo trasero y un escudo térmico.

A medida que la nave espacial atraviese la atmósfera marciana, su escudo térmico tendrá que soportar temperaturas de hasta 2.100 ºC.

Cuando esté a unos 11 km del suelo, la nave desplegará un paracaídas que ralentizará la velocidad del vehículo desde los 2.099 km/h hasta aproximadamente 320 km/h.

Luego, el escudo térmico se separará de la cubierta posterior y por un corto período de tiempo el robot caerá libremente hacia el suelo.

A continuación se activarán ocho retrocohetes, que permitirán realizar la maniobra “grúa celeste”, mediante la que el Perseverance descenderá lentamente con tres cuerdas de nylon y un “cordón umbilical”.

Cuando las ruedas del explorador toquen el suelo, se soltará de estas ataduras.

Esta es la primera misión de la NASA que busca directamente “firmas” o signos biológicos de vida desde la de Viking en la década de 1970.
