Crean un casco magnético capaz de encoger tumores cerebrales

La tecnología en áreas de la salud avanza a pasos agigantados y un ejemplo claro de esto es una de las invenciones más recientes. Se trata de un casco magnético que podría significar la cura para determinados tipos de tumores cerebrales.

El casco en cuestión cuenta con tres potentes imanes permanentes giratorios integrados triangularmente que generan un campo magnético oscilante. La teoría detrás de esta invención explica que es el campo magnético el encargado de tratar con las células indicadas en el área afectada por el cáncer.

Si bien este casco fue creado hace relativamente poco, ya fue probado en un paciente de 53 años de edad y demostró resultados. Lamentablemente, el hombre, quien padecía de un letal tipo de cáncer conocido como gliobastoma, falleció debido a una lesión no relacionada.

A pesar de no haberse completado el tratamiento, una autopsia demostró que el procedimiento con el casco magnético habría estado surtiendo efecto pues había alcanzado a remover un 31 por ciento del tumor en el poco tiempo que se estuvo realizando la prueba.

El procedimiento consistió en que el paciente usara el dispositivo sobre su cabeza a lo largo de cinco semanas repartidas tanto en la clínica como desde su propia casa con ayuda de su esposa. El uso del casco magnético, a su vez, tuvo que mantenerse por dos horas inicialmente para luego aumentar hasta un máximo de seis horas al día.

Cabe aclarar que el gliobastoma es una forma bastante rara de tumor, pero igualmente agresiva pues crece en el encéfalo o el tronco encefálico y la gran mayoría de veces es considerado mortal. El tratamiento requerido usualmente consiste en jornadas intensivas de radioterapia quimioterapia que no muchos pacientes llegan a completar.

Los descubrimientos realizados con el casco magnético, que usa microprocesadores para su movimiento, podrían significar el primer método de tratamiento no invasivo para tratar el gliobastoma.

El panorama se ve bastante optimista a pesar del lamentable suceso. El logro conseguido mediante el uso de la máquina de disminuir un tercio del tumor de forma consistente podría significar una nueva alternativa para los tratamientos de su estilo.

Aún falta realizar más pruebas para asegurar la efectividad del casco en cuestión, pero dado el caso que demuestre su eficacia será una opción que permitirá tratar tumores cerebrales sin que los pacientes tengan que pasar por tratamientos invasivos como la quimioterapia y la radioterapia.
