Científicos planean un sistema satelital que pueda detectar un incendio forestal en menos de 20 minutos

Los incendios de Australia en 2019-2020 son considerados por expertos como uno de los fenómenos más desastrosos de la historia contemporánea. Según datos oficiales, el fuego, que se mantuvo vigente en varios estados de Australia con más de 15 mil incendios desde junio de 2019 hasta mayo de 2020, habría afectado al menos unos 10 millones de hectáreas o lo que es lo mismo, unos 63 mil kilómetros cuadrados.

Asimismo, se reportó la muerte de unas 50 personas, mientras que los decesos de los animales se cuentan por miles. Un estudio del Fondo Mundial para la Naturaleza (WWF) asegura que casi tres mil millones de animales, de toda clase, resultaron afectados por las conflagraciones, ya sea perdiendo la vida en medio de estas o siendo desplazadas forzosamente de su lugar de origen.

“Los hallazgos provisionales son impactantes. Es difícil pensar en otro evento en cualquier parte del mundo que recordemos y que haya matado o desplazado a tantos animales (…) Esto se ubica como uno de los peores desastres de vida silvestre en la historia moderna”, explicó el presidente ejecutivo de WWF-Australia, Dermot O’Gorman.

Ahora, la emergencia surge en California, Estados Unidos, donde, según las autoridades, podrían presentarse daños peores que los registrados en 2020.

Sin embargo, pensando en estas situaciones y los costos en vidas y materiales que representan, es que la Universidad de California en Berkeley planea crear un sistema satelital que pueda, no solo detectar a tiempo el inicio de un incendio forestal, sino que también ofrezca herramientas para que los socorristas puedan extinguir el fuego rápidamente.

“Un físico y un bombero convertido en científico planean equipar aviones de observación con detectores infrarrojos mejorados para aprender más sobre cómo se propagan los incendios. Y dentro de cuatro años, esperan enviar sistemas similares al espacio para el descubrimiento y monitoreo de incendios 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana”, explicó la institución por medio de un comunicado.
