Más de 50 millones de personas sufrieron trastornos depresivos graves en el 2020 debido a la pandemia del covid-19, según un estudio

Investigadores llegaron a esta conclusión al realizar una revisión sistemática de los informes científicos sobre la prevalencia de estas enfermedades.

Más de 50 millones de personas sufrieron trastornos depresivos graves en el 2020 debido a la pandemia, según un estudio de científicos australianos, publicado este viernes en la revista The Lancet. 

“Antes del 2020, los trastornos mentales eran las principales causas de la carga mundial relacionada con la salud, […] la aparición de la pandemia del covid-19 creó un entorno en el que se exacerban muchos factores determinantes de la mala salud mental”, apuntaron los investigadores.

El equipo realizó una revisión sistemática de los informes científicos sobre la prevalencia del trastorno depresivo y la ansiedad durante la pandemia, publicados entre el 1 de enero de 2020 y el 29 de enero de 2021, para después reunir, clasificar y representar todos los datos en una metarregresión. Para medir el impacto de la pandemia en un área determinada, el equipo analizó las tasas diarias de infección, las restricciones a la movilidad y las tasas de mortalidad excesiva diaria.

Se determinó que la prevalencia del trastorno depresivo mayor y el trastorno de ansiedad está directamente vinculada con las tasas de movilidad humana y contagio con la enfermedad. 

Según los resultados, a nivel mundial 53,2 millones de personas sufrieron trastorno depresivo mayor, lo que supone un aumento de nuevos casos en un 27,6%. De este modo, la prevalencia total de la enfermedad fue de 3.152,9 casos por 100.000 habitantes. Al mismo tiempo, los científicos apuntaron a la aparición de 76,2 millones de personas adicionales con trastornos de ansiedad (crecimiento de más del 25%).

De acuerdo al estudio, la pandemia llevó a “una urgencia cada vez mayor para fortalecer los sistemas de salud mental en la mayoría de los países”. Las estrategias de mitigación deberían apuntar a las causas de la mala salud mental, y podrían incorporar formas de promover el bienestar mental e intervenciones para tratar a las personas con dichos trastornos.
