Estudio confirma que la falta de vitamina D eleva sensiblemente el riesgo de padecer síntomas graves o de morir por covid-19

Los investigadores descubrieron que el 40 % de los pacientes analizados tenían déficit de esta vitamina.

Científicos iraníes han aportado pruebas que corroboran que la ingesta suplementaria de vitamina D puede reducir significativamente el riesgo de desarrollar síntomas graves del covid-19, según concluyen en un estudio publicado el 2 de septiembre en la revista NaturScientific Reports. 

Investigadores de la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas Shahid Behesti analizaron en 508 pacientes la relación entre los niveles de 25-hidroxivitamina D, que se produce por hidroxilación de la vitamina D3, la severidad y la mortalidad del coronavirus. 

Contrariamente a lo que se creía, descubrieron que el 40 % de los participantes tenían menos de 20 ng / ml de 25-hidroxivitamina D, lo que se considera deficiencia de vitamina D.

“La mortalidad de la enfermedad tenía una correlación positiva con la edad y negativa con los niveles séricos de 25-hidroxivitamina D, calcio y albúmina“, escriben los científicos. Asimismo, subrayan que en pacientes hospitalizados por covid-19, la deficiencia de 25-hidroxivitamina D estaba relacionada con el riesgo elevado de enfermedad severa, ingreso en la UCI y muerte.

Según los científicos, en casos graves de coronavirus, el sistema inmunológico “no tiene la respuesta adecuada para prevenir que se multiplique y progrese la infección viral”. En este sentido, se estima que la causa de la correlación entre la deficiencia de la vitamina D y los casos graves puede radicar en las propiedades antibacteriales y antivirales de la vitamina D.

Entretanto, mientras la edad de los pacientes estaba directamente relacionada con la mortalidad, no se ha encontrado una correlación entre el sexo de la persona y la gravedad de la enfermedad.
