Sara Rogel, la joven condenada a 30 años por aborto, es liberada de prisión

La joven salvadoreña Sara Rogel ha pasado casi nueve de sus 28 años entre rejas por abortar. Y la pena original era aún mayor: 30 años de cárcel por homicidio agravado. La justicia salvadoreña decidió al final conmutar su pena y reducirla en dos tercios, lo que ha permitido que ahora salga de prisión.

El entorno de Sara afirma que nunca quiso abortar, que se cayó mientras lavaba la ropa y su familia la llevó al hospital, inconsciente y sangrando. En aquella época, Sara, una joven de una zona rural de El Salvador, tenía 20 años y estaba embarazada de ocho meses. Cuando llegó al hospital, la acusaron de haber querido acabar con su embarazo, por lo que fue imputada por homicidio agravado y condenada a 30 años de cárcel.

La abogada de la joven, Karla Vaquerano, expresaba su satisfacción a las puertas de la cárcel.

“Pues con mucha alegría, es indescriptible estas emociones que uno siente después de más de ocho años, casi ya nueve años. Sara ha estado privada de su libertad por una condena que consideramos fue injustamente atribuida”, decía.

El caso de Sara no es una excepción. En El Salvador, mujeres que pierden a sus bebés durante el embarazo son acusadas a menudo de haber abortado, algo prohibido en el país en todas las circunstancias y tipificado como homicidio agravado, con una pena de 30 años de cárcel. Al menos 15 salvadoreñas se encuentran en prisión por este motivo.
