Laura Richardson se convirtió en la primera mujer en dirigir el Comando Sur de Estados Unidos

Con su toma de posesión el 29 de octubre, la generala del Ejército de Estados Unidos Laura Richardson se convirtió en la primera mujer en dirigir el Comando Sur de Estados Unidos (SOUTHCOM) y en la tercera mujer en dirigir uno de los 11 comandos combatientes unificados del ejército estadounidense.

Como comandante, Richardson supervisa las operaciones militares de Estados Unidos en toda América del Sur y Central, además del Caribe.

“Debemos apresurarnos a recoger los pedazos dejados por la pandemia y transformar nuestras relaciones para hacer frente a los desafíos en materia de seguridad del siglo XXI”, dijo durante su audiencia de confirmacion en el Senado (en inglés) durante el verano. “Sencillamente, ganar junto con nuestros aliados y socios es importante”.

Richardson cuenta con una experiencia muy variada, desde la dirección de pequeñas compañías hasta la de teatros de operaciones con batallones del Ejército de Tierra durante sus más de 30 años de servicio. En particular, dirigió un batallón de helicópteros de asalto en Iraq entre 2003 y 2004, durante la Operación Libertad Iraquí (Iraqi Freedom).

Richardson también fue asistente militar del vicepresidente en la Casa Blanca, enlace legislativo del Ejército ante el Congreso en el Capitolio de Estados Unidos y planificadora de campañas del Ejército en el Pentágono.

Richardson dirige la presencia de Estados Unidos en América Latina y el Caribe para

  1. Proporcionar ayuda humanitaria y auxilio en casos de catástrofe.
  2. Detener el narcoterrorismo y el tráfico de drogas.
  3. Ayudar a los países a recuperarse de la pandemia de COVID-19.
