Cuerpo de Isabel II llega a la capilla de San Jorge en el castillo de Windsor

El féretro con los restos mortales de Isabel II llegó este lunes después de las 15.00 hora local (14.00 GMT) hasta el castillo Windsor, en cuya capilla de San Jorge será enterrada esta tarde al lado de su esposo, el duque de Edimburgo.

Al término del servicio religioso oficiado hoy en la abadía de Westminster, en Londres, el féretro de la monarca fue sacado del templo sobre una cureña tirada con cuerdas por más de un centenar de marineros de la Royal Navy (Marina), y recorrió en procesión las calles de la capital, seguido a pie por el nuevo rey Carlos III, el príncipe Guillermo de Gales y otros miembros de la familia real.

A su llegada al arco de Wellington, en la esquina sureste de Hyde Park, el ataúd fue transferido a un vehículo fúnebre y, desde allí, partió en su último viaje, hasta Windsor, a unos 35 kilómetros de Londres.

A su llegada, como estaba previsto, los restos de Isabel II recorrieron en procesión los cerca de 5 kilómetros del denominado Long Walk, la avenida arbolada que desemboca en el castillo de Windsor, la residencia real donde más tiempo solía pasar la reina.

En la capilla de San Jorge, un lugar habitual de bautizos, bodas y funerales reales, se celebrará en la tarde del lunes un servicio religioso ante unos 800 invitados.

En los últimos años, esa capilla acogió el enlace entre el príncipe Enrique y Meghan, en 2018, así como el funeral del príncipe Felipe, esposo de la reina, en abril de 2021.

Esta tarde, a las 19.30 hora local (18.30 GMT), Isabel II será enterrada junto a los restos de su esposo en la cripta de la capilla.
