Advierten que las mujeres embarazadas corren un mayor riesgo de morir por coronavirus

Especialistas de los CDC apuntaron que las mujeres gestantes tienen una probabilidad significativamente mayor de ingreso en la UCI en comparación con mujeres no embarazadas.

Las mujeres embarazadas que contraen el coronavirus, corren un mayor riesgo de sufrir complicaciones graves y de morir por la enfermedad, reza un estudio de los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades de EE.UU. (CDC, por su sigla en inglés), publicado este lunes.

Tras estudiar a unas 400.000 mujeres entre 15 y 44 años con el covid-19, de las cuales 23.434 (5,7%) estaban encinta, los especialistas llegaron a la conclusión de que las embarazadas tenían una probabilidad significativamente mayor de ingreso en la UCI, de necesitar ventilación invasiva y oxigenación por membrana extracorpórea, aunque el riesgo general para ellas sigue siendo pequeño porque tienden a ser más jóvenes y sanas.

Además, se registraron 34 muertes entre las 23.434 gestantes sintomáticas, y 447 entre 386.028 mujeres no embarazadas, “lo que refleja un aumento del 70 % del riesgo de muerte asociado al embarazo“, subrayaron los expertos.

La investigación de los CDC también reveló la trayectoria dispar de la pandemia en EE.UU. según la etnia, donde las mujeres negras, hispanas y asiáticas corren un mayor peligro a causa del virus.

Entre las embarazadas sintomáticas analizadas, el 30 % eran hispanas, mientras el 24 % eran blancas. Las hispanas no solo experimentaron un riesgo mayor de contagio, sino que además el embarazo se asoció con 2,4 veces el riesgo de muerte.

“Algunas piensan que porque eres joven y sana, estarás bien, mientras la fatiga pandémica se está desarrollando. Pero el hecho es que en mi consulta, hemos visto mujeres embarazadas con respiradores. Afecta a la madre, al parto y al bebé“, afirmó David Jaspan, director del Departamento de Obstetricia y Ginecología de la Red de Asistencia de Salud Albert Einstein de Filadelfia, que no participó en el estudio, informa The Washington Post.

“No tenemos ninguna posibilidad de predecir cómo le afectará, así que el mejor consejo que podemos ofrecer es la prevención“, declaró el médico y concluyó. “Usen una máscara. Guarden la distancia social. Manténganse alejadas de las personas que puedan estar infectadas”, agregó.
