Ucrania recibirá 31 tanques Abrams donados por Estados Unidos

Estados Unidos anunció este miércoles que enviará a Ucrania 31 tanques Abrams y empezará a entrenar inmediatamente en un tercer país a soldados ucranianos en su uso y mantenimiento.

Los tanques tardarán “meses” en llegar a Ucrania e irán acompañados de unos vehículos blindados de recuperación llamados M88, que servirán para darles apoyo, adelantó una alta funcionaria estadounidense en declaraciones a la prensa.

Según esa fuente, el Gobierno de Joe Biden ha decidido mandar exactamente 31 carros de combate Abrams a Ucrania porque esa cifra equivale a un batallón de tanques en las Fuerzas Armadas ucranianas.

Pese a que los tanques aún tardarán en llegar, Estados Unidos empezará a entrenar inmediatamente a militares ucranianos para que aprendan a operar esos vehículos “complejos” y puedan mantenerlos a lo largo del tiempo.

El entrenamiento tendrá lugar en un tercer país, no dentro de Ucrania, pero el Gobierno de EE.UU. aún no ha hecho público dónde se desarrollará.

Por su parte, el Departamento de Defensa estadounidense está buscando mecanismos que permitan enviar a Ucrania el equipo y el combustible que necesitan los Abrams, detalló otro alto funcionario a los periodistas.

El presidente de EE.UU., Joe Biden, tiene previsto hacer oficial el anuncio con un discurso en la Casa Blanca que empezará en breve.

Biden, además, habló este miércoles por teléfono con el canciller alemán, Olaf Scholz¡; con su homólogo francés, Emmanuel Macron, y con los primeros ministros de Reino Unido e Italia, Rishi Sunak y Giorgia Meloni, respectivamente, informó la Casa Blanca.

Según explicó a la prensa otro funcionario, el envío de los tanques Abrams muestra el “compromiso a largo plazo” de EE.UU. con la defensa de Ucrania y la “fuerte unidad y determinación” de la comunidad internacional.

Alemania anunció este miércoles el envío de 14 tanques Leopard 2 A6 y otros países, como España, se han mostrado dispuestos a enviar esos carros de combate a Ucrania.
