Investigadores de la OMS creen haber encontrado el origen del coronavirus

El organismo publicará en las próximas semanas un informe con los hallazgos de la misión que visitó China a comienzos de este año.

Las granjas de animales exóticos en el sur de China son la fuente más probable de la pandemia, según el ecologista Peter Daszak, que forma parte de la misión de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) encargada de investigar los orígenes del SARS-CoV-2 en el país asiático.

Según explicó en una entrevista emitida este martes por la radio estadounidense NPR, los expertos de la OMS encontraron nuevas pruebas de que estas granjas suministraban animales al mercado de Huanan en la ciudad de Wuhan, donde se detectó por primera vez la nueva enfermedad.

Daszak, presidente de la organización no gubernamental EcoHealth Alliance, explicó que, antes de la pandemia, este sector ganadero era próspero y fue alentado por el Gobierno como una forma de sacar a la población rural de la pobreza.

“En 2016, [los chinos] tenían 14 millones de personas empleadas en granjas de vida silvestre y era una industria de 70.000 millones de dólares“, explicó el experto. Sin embargo, en febrero de 2020, Pekín anunció repentinamente su cierre y ordenó a los empleados que “se deshicieran” de los animales.

Las autoridades “emitieron una declaración afirmando que iban a detener la cría de vida silvestre como alimento” y “enviaron instrucciones a los granjeros sobre cómo deshacerse de los animales de manera segura —enterrándolos, matándolos o quemándolos— para no propagar enfermedades”, continuó.
