El 17% de la comida en el mundo se desperdicia, según la ONU

Esta cantidad equivale a más de 930 millones de toneladas de comida botada cada año.

Cada año, los habitantes del planeta desperdiciamos 17 % de los alimentos que se producen a nivel mundial, determinó un estudio conjunto del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medioambiente (PNUMA) y la asociación WRAP (‘Producción responsable mundialmente acreditada’), publicado este jueves. Esto supone más de 930 millones de toneladas de comida echada a la basura por restaurantes, tiendas y hogares, de acuerdo con estadísticas de 2019.

Para visualizarlo mejor, se pueden imaginar cerca de 23 millones de camiones cargados cada uno con 40 toneladas de comida. Pero además, parte de los alimentos se pierde en las granjas o en las cadenas de suministro, con lo cual, finalmente, nunca llegamos a comer un tercio de lo producido.

La mayor parte de los desperdicios, un 61 %, se produce en los hogares –y esto no se limita a los países de ingresos más altos–, mientras que un 26 % recae en los servicios alimenticios y un 13 % en los minoristas, calcularon los autores del informe. Con su investigación se propusieron animar a los gobiernos, negocios y ciudadanos de todo el mundo a hacer lo que de ellos dependa para minimizar el desperdicio de nutrientes.

“Muchos países todavía no han cuantificado su desperdicio de alimentos, por lo cual no comprenden la magnitud del problema”, comentó a AP una coautora del informe, Clementine O’Connor, del Programa para el Medioambiente de la ONU.

Parte del problema es también el alto costo ambiental que conlleva la producción de alimentos. Además de que se necesitan vastos terrenos para los cultivos y el mantenimiento de animales, se generan emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Según el informe de la ONU, entre un 8 % y un 10 % de todas esas emisiones está relacionado con la comida no consumida.
