EE.UU. advierte que atacarán “en el momento y lugar que elijan” tras los bombardeos a su base en Irak

El secretario de Defensa de EE.UU. advierte que atacarán “en el momento y lugar que elijan” tras los bombardeos a su base en Irak.

Lloyd Austin apunta a la necesidad de “responsabilizar a las personas por sus actos” mientras mantienen su atención centrada en Irán.

El secretario de Defensa de Estados Unidos, Lloyd Austin, declaró este fin de semana que todavía se encuentran evaluando quién estuvo detrás de un reciente ataque con misiles contra una base aérea estadounidense en Irak, pero aseguró que Washington podrá atacar nuevamente en cualquier momento mientras mantienen su atención centrada en Irán.

Al menos 10 misiles cayeron el miércoles sobre la base aérea de Ain al Asad, que alberga tropas estadounidenses de la coalición, así como fuerzas iraquíes. Aunque se informó que el incidente no causó pérdidas significativas, un contratista de EE.UU. presente en las instalaciones sufrió un infarto durante la embestida y posteriormente, falleció.

La ofensiva se produjo después de que el presidente Joe Biden ordenara un bombardeo contra objetivos de las milicias respaldadas por Irán en Siria, en respuesta a un ataque anterior con cohetes contra objetivos del país norteamericano en Irak.

“Siempre responsabilizaremos a las personas por sus actos”, afirmó Austin durante una entrevista a ABC News, enfatizando el legítimo derecho de “proteger” a sus tropas. Si EE.UU. decide tomar represalias, lo hará “en el momento y lugar que elija“, subrayó.

Asimismo, afirmó que Teherán “es plenamente capaz de evaluar” y sacar sus propias conclusiones sobre las intenciones de un ataque aéreo estadounidense, señalando que la nación persa es el principal patrocinador de las milicias chiitas, a pesar de que todavía no se ha comprobado la participación de este grupo en los bombardeos. La República Islámica debe “elegir hacer las cosas correctas”, agregó Austin.

Días atrás, desde el Ministerio de Exteriores de Irán condenaron enérgicamente la ofensiva de EE.UU. a Siria tachándola de acción “agresiva e ilegal” que representa una “clara violación de la soberanía e integridad territorial y una violación del derecho internacional”, lo que podría agudizar el conflicto militar y desestabilizar aún más la región.
