Costa Rica enfrenta crisis de inseguridad con su año más violento: 907 homicidios en 2023

Costa Rica se enfrenta a un alarmante incremento en la violencia criminal, marcando el año 2023 como el más mortífero en su historia en términos de homicidios. Según datos proporcionados por las autoridades, se registraron 907 asesinatos, representando una tasa de 17,2% homicidios por cada 100,000 habitantes. Este aumento del 38,6% respecto al año anterior preocupa a este país centroamericano, conocido por mucho tiempo como uno de los más seguros de América Latina.

El informe del Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) señala que la mayoría de estas muertes violentas están vinculadas a ajustes de cuentas entre bandas por el control territorial del mercado de drogas. Las ciudades portuarias de Limón y Puntarenas son particularmente afectadas por la penetración del narcotráfico, revela el informe.

El director del OIJ, Randall Zúñiga, indica que el 80,3% de los homicidios se cometieron con armas de fuego, acentuando la gravedad de la situación. El ministro de Seguridad Pública, Mario Zamora, ha comparado el narcotráfico con un “cáncer” que, no siendo detectado a tiempo, se ha extendido. Costa Rica, como parte de la región centroamericana, se ha convertido en un corredor para la droga que viaja de Sudamérica hacia Estados Unidos y Europa, alimentando el crecimiento de carteles cada vez más organizados.
