Tragedia en Guyana: un incendio en una escuela deja 19 niños muertos y decenas de heridos.

Un feroz incendio consumió un dormitorio de la Escuela Secundaria en Mahdia, en Guyana, matando al menos a 19 niños y dejando varios heridos en el proceso, según informó el gobierno del país.

“Esto es horrendo. Aún no sabemos con exactitud la causa del incendio, aunque eso ahora mismo no es prioridad. Nuestra prioridad ahora son los niños y que les proveamos la mayor ayuda posible”, dijo el presidente de Guyana, Irfaan Ali.

Ali aseguró que se están organizando para que los mayores hospitales de la capital reciban a los heridos que necesiten cuidados médicos.

Las llamas se produjeron poco antes de la medianoche en el edificio residencial de la escuela de Mahdia. El Departamento de Información Pública de Guyana declaró: “Hemos perdido muchas almas hermosas”. El número de muertos al inicio ascendía a 20, pero gracias a los esfuerzos de los bomberos que sofocaron las llamas y los médicos se logró confirmar más tarde que fueron 19 porque se logró revivir a este último.

El asesor de Seguridad Nacional, Gerald Gouveia, dijo que la cifra final de los fallecidos fue revisada y actualizada después de que los médicos en el hospital lograran traer de vuelta a uno de ellos, a pesar de que “todos pensaban que había muerto”.

Se asegura que cuando los bomberos llegaron al lugar el edificio ya se encontraba totalmente en llamas y que 14 niños fallecieron en el lugar y otros cinco en el hospital. Las autoridades revelan que dos niños más se encuentran en estado crítico y cuatro más sufren heridas graves. Seis estudiantes más fueron atendidos en Georgetown y otros cinco quedaron en el Hospital de Mahdia, al mismo tiempo que 10 más se encuentran en observación.

Las autoridades pretenden comprender cómo se dieron los hechos que ocasionaron el espantoso y mortal desastre y tomarán las medidas necesarias para evitar que vuelva a suceder.
