Zillennials, la nueva generación

Atrapados entre dos generaciones, no son “ni chicha ni limonada”. Este microgrupo de personas no se identifica completamente con las habilidades tecnológicas de la Generación Z. ¿Es usted uno de ellos?

Definir a las personas por la década en que nacieron es una mala costumbre de nuestros tiempos. Sin embargo, investigadores sociales consideran que la forma en que las personas crecen y utilizan la tecnología sí define a un grupo de personas dentro de una generación.

Este tema, incluso, ha creado expertos en generaciones. Consultado por CNN, Jason Dorsey es un investigador sobre generaciones que dirige la empresa Center for Generational Kinetics. En entrevista con el medio estadounidense, afirma que es normal que las generaciones rechacen los nombres o etiquetas que otros les dan, mientras que otras recibirán y adoptarán el título si sienten que se alinea con sus valores o características únicas.

Este sería el caso de los zillennials, la generación que acaban de identificar estos expertos de generaciones. En ella se encuentran celebridades como Zendaya, Kendrick Lamar, Ciara, Michael Phelps, Kim Jong-un, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo y Serena Williams.

Todos ellos nacieron entre inicios de los años 90 y principios de los 2000 y se encuentran en un limbo muy particular: se trata de personas que están entre los millennials, considerados como los pioneros digitales, y la Generación Z, los nativos digitales, que nunca conocieron un Walkman, un VHS ni la vida antes de las pantallas.

Muchos de ellos no se han ido de la casa de sus papás, así que el dinero de un alquiler o una hipoteca lo gastan en lujos, así que están comprando estos productos tres a cinco años antes que las generaciones anteriores. Algunos de ellos tienen un ingreso estable y han crecido usando internet, lo que los convierte en consumidores inteligentes con mucho dinero disponible.

Sabrina Grimaldi es una mujer de 23 años que creó un sitio web llamado Zillennial Zine, dedicado a contenidos propios de su microgeneración. En entrevista con CNN, definió a su generación de una manera contundente: “Nosotros crecimos con la tecnología, pero no somos bailarines de TikTok como la Generación Z ni estamos en MySpace como los millennials”. 

La socióloga Deborah Carr manifiesta que que los zillenials han experimentado y superado una gran cantidad de adversidades en sus vidas relativamente cortas, incluyendo el 11 de septiembre y la pandemia covid-19. A menudo se sienten incomprendidos y no encajan claramente en ninguna de las dos generaciones a las que están vinculados.
