El Inter y el Real Madrid abrieron el grupo en el Giuseppe Meazza y hasta el final no se decidió pese a ser un partidazo en el que pudo pasar de todo. El Inter creció con Inzaghi, con Conte en la pasada segunda vuelta y se notó. Estuvieron mejores defensivamente, férreos en el centro del campo y tuvieron sus oportunidades, pero Rodrygo Goes volvió a decidir en el mismo escenario donde lo hizo un año antes.

La primera parte fue del Inter en lo táctico. Los de Inzaghi dificultaron muchísimo las posesiones del Real Madrid, permitieron poco, anularon a Vinicius y a Benzema comandados por Bastoni y Skriniar, y tuvieron incluso sus oportunidades para acabar poniéndose por delante, pero un gigantesco Thibaut Courtois acabó impidiendo dicho merecimiento.

Los blancos mejoraron en los segundos cuarenta y cinco minutos, compitieron, salieron mejor desde atrás y tuvieron hasta ocasiones para ponerse por delante, pero los cambios de Inzaghi pusieron de nuevo la balanza en el mismo nivel. Hasta que al final, una gran asistencia de Camavinga y un remate con la zurda de Rodrygo le dieron tres puntos al Real Madrid en el partido más complicado que, a priori, tendrán de esta primera fase de la Champions League.
