El Chelsea de Lampard, contra un Rennes sin Camavinga

Stamford Bridge, duro examen para el equipo francés, que solo ha sumado un punto en esta liguilla de Champions

Edouard Mendy, ahora portero titular ‘blue’, ante su pasado: fichó por el Chelsea procedente del Rennes.

Con Edouard Mendy bajo palos, el Chelsea de Frank Lampard recibe este miércoles en la tercera jornada de la liguilla de Champions al Rennes, anterior equipo del ahora portero titular ‘blue’, en detrimento de Kepa Arrizabalaga. Mendy se mide al conjunto que constituye su reciente pasado, un Rennes que solo ha sumado un punto en este grupo E y que afronta el duro examen de Stamford Bridge sin Eduardo Camavinga, su joya, que se halla lesionado.

La presente es la primera participación en Champions del Rennes (que para este encuentro recupera tras su sanción a Steven Nzonzi). Lampard, por su parte, tiene en forma a sus otros fichajes estelares, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech o Kai Havertz.

El Chelsea, 7º en la Premier, es líder de este grupo E gracias a la diferencia de goles, con los mismos puntos que el Sevilla. Les siguen con un punto Rennes y Krasnodar, que visita este miércoles al campeón de la Europa League. Lampard cree que la lesión de isquiotibiales que sufre Christian Pulisic, baja ante el Rennes, no reviste gravedad.

Lampard eligió a Mendy como titular en lugar de Kepa y, preguntado sobre el cancerbero nacionalizado senegalés por los medios franceses en conferencia de prensa, se mostró este martes encantado con el ex portero del Rennes: “Antes de ficharle investigamos su personalidad, nos dijeron que es muy buena y fuerte en el vestuario. Todo lo que llegaba a mis oídos era positivo. Que no necesita que le cuiden mucho, que trabaje duro, que siempre quiere trabajar más, que va hacia sus compañeros de equipo. Siempre tiene una sonrisa”.

El entrenador del Chelsea añadió sobre Edouard Mendy: “Es muy positivo cuando entra un jugador y se desempeña muy bien de inmediato. Aportó mucha calma, a través de su juego con los pies, en los cruces. Hizo todo lo que esperas de un portero”.

El Rennes, 3º en la Ligue 1 a 3 puntos del Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), sabe que, por difícil que sea y más sin su estrella Camavinga, necesita puntuar en el terreno del Chelsea para alimentar sus opciones de alcanzar los octavos en la primera participación. En las dos primeras jornadas de la liguilla, 1-1 contra el Krasnodar y derrota por 1-0 contra el Sevilla.
