Hoy, 1 de mayo se conmemora el Día Internacional del Trabajo. Su declaración fue hecha en 1889 en homenaje a los obreros de Chicago; un grupo de 200 mil trabajadores que iniciaron una huelga en esta misma fecha, en 1883 y que culminó el 4 de mayo del mismo año, en la cual buscaban reducir las horas laborales de 12 o 16 horas incluso, a 8 horas.
Aunque el objetivo se cumplió, el proceso fue difícil, dejando decenas de muertos y heridos en la ciudad de los EE.UU.
La fecha se ha convertido en una tradición, muchas personas salen a las calles a manifestarse para exigir sus derechos laborales.
Y otras, sólo agradecen por el recurso que les permite mantener a su familia. Tal es el caso de don Alexander Torres y su esposa, la señora María Magdalena, ambos vendedores de café y pan, se ubica todos los días sobre la 7 Av. En San Salvador, en las cercanías del Centro Histórico.
Su faena inicia desde muy temprano, cuentan; a las 4 A.M se ubican en el puesto, porque su trabajo requiere deleitar el paladar de sus clientes que hacen una pausa camino a sus labores, para disfrutar de tan anhelada bebida, acompañado del infaltable pan dulce, que apenas y acaba de salir del horno a esa hora de la mañana. Un olor que conquista a cualquiera que camine por el sector.
Aunque para esta pareja la vida no ha sido fácil, reconocen como una bendición el poder tener su “humilde negocio” como ellos lo definen, pues ha sido la forma en que han sacado adelante a sus tres hijos.
En cuanto a los reordenamientos de la Alcaldía de San Salvador, temen disminuir sus ventas.
“Estamos ahí con la incertidumbre por la razón del desalojo, se supone que en agosto nos van a quitar de acá verdad, y mientras eso no suceda vamos a seguir vendiendo lo que estamos vendiendo, para siempre ganarnos el pan de cada día”.
A pesar del temor al ser desalojados don Alexander, mantiene siempre una actitud positiva “se ha extraído más riqueza de la mente humana que de la misma tierra, mientras tengamos ideas en nuestros pensamientos vamos a salir adelante” concluyó
