Por lo menos ocho migrantes fueron encontrados muertos en el río Bravo, después de que decenas de ellos intentaron cruzar de México a Texas cerca de Eagle Pass, informaron las autoridades
Los funcionarios de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza de Estados Unidos (CBP, por sus siglas en inglés) y de México hicieron el hallazgo el jueves, mientras respondían al reporte de que un gran grupo de personas cruzaba el río.
Las fuertes lluvias de los últimos días provocaron corrientes particularmente rápidas. Los funcionarios estadounidenses recuperaron seis cadáveres, mientras que los equipos mexicanos recuperaron otros dos, según un comunicado de la CBP.
La entidad dijo que los equipos estadounidenses rescataron a 37 personas del río y detuvieron a 16 más, mientras que las autoridades mexicanas tomaron bajo custodia a 39 migrantes. Los funcionarios de ambos lados de la frontera continúan buscando a cualquier posible víctima, precisó la CBP.
La CBP no precisó de qué país o países eran los migrantes y no proporcionó ninguna información adicional sobre el rescate ni la búsqueda. Las agencias locales de Texas que estuvieron involucradas no respondieron por el momento a solicitudes de información.
El sector Del Rio de la Patrulla Fronteriza, que incluye a Eagle Pass, se está convirtiendo en el corredor más concurrido para los cruces ilegales: los agentes detuvieron a migrantes en el sector casi 50.000 veces en julio; en un distante segundo lugar se ubica Rio Grande Valley con aproximadamente 35.000.
La zona atrae a inmigrantes de docenas de países, muchos de ellos familias con niños pequeños. Cerca de 6 de cada 10 detenciones en el sector Del Rio fueron de migrantes provenientes de Venezuela, Cuba o Nicaragua.
El sector, que se extiende 395 kilómetros (245 millas) a lo largo del río Bravo, es muy peligroso porque las corrientes del río pueden ser engañosamente rápidas y cambiar de repente. Cruzarlo puede ser un reto incluso para los buenos nadadores.
