Grupos indígenas logran que Jeep cambie el nombre de sus vehículos

Un portavoz del pueblo autóctono saludó la decisión de la compañía y aseguró que ambas partes mantienen un diálogo “abierto” al respecto.

Carlos Tavares, el director ejecutivo de Stellantis, la firma automovilística propietaria de Jeep, afirmó que la compañía está dispuesta a eliminar la palabra ‘Cherokee’ de sus vehículos todoterreno, como ‘Jeep Grand Cherokee’ y ‘Jeep Cherokee’. La declaración responde al reciente llamado del grupo indígena que lleva el mismo nombre para que la empresa deje de utilizar la denominación de la tribu, informa The Wall Street Journal.

“Estamos dispuestos a ir a cualquier punto, hasta donde decidamos con las personas adecuadas y sin intermediarios. En este momento, no sé si hay un problema real. Pero si lo hay, por supuesto que lo resolveremos”, destacó Tavares en el marco de una entrevista citada por el medio.

Por su parte, un portavoz del grupo autóctono saludó la decisión de la marca automovilística. “Apreciamos que Stellantis haya tendido la mano y haya reflexionado sobre este tema”, destacó el vocero de la tribu, agregando que las partes involucradas mantienen un diálogo “abierto”.

Anteriormente, Chuck Hoskin, el líder de los cheroquis, el grupo indígena más grande de EE.UU. que cuenta con aproximadamente 370.000 miembros, exigió a Jeep que retire la denominación, argumentando que no les honra tener su nombre “pegado en el lateral de un coche”.

‘Jeep Grand Cherokee’ y ‘Jeep Cherokee’ son dos de los modelos más cotizados de la compañía, representando el 43 % de sus ventas en el mercado estadounidense. Estos autos llevan el polémico término desde su lanzamiento en la década de 1970.
