Bekatorou tenía 21 años cuando viajó al extranjero con el resto del equipo de vela griego en 1998 para competir en las pruebas de clasificación para los Juegos Olímpicos de Sydney. Al equipo se le unió un ejecutivo de una federación de vela que celebró con ellos su calificación.
